I have become such a fan and supporter of independent cinema because I find it does a better job of creating work that is not formulaic or has to follow the same patterns as movies produced by Hollywood studios. Another project I enjoyed is, "The DL Chronicles". I remember first hearing about this project through my involvement with OUTFest and at first I was ambivalent. It came out around the same time as J.L. King's first book which I had taken strong issue with and also an episode of, "Law & Order" that dealt with the topic of the "DL". I was so tired of hearing about the DL that I didn't care what this project was about.

Quincy LeNear and Deondray Gossett quickly changed my mind with their masterful writing, inspired directing, and seamless production. I am a definite fan. Currently they are running a KickStarter campaign to complete Season 2 of the, "DL Chronicles". This is a great chance to get in on the grassroots level of this project and insure that stories that are not being told are left as a legacy. One of the my great joys in writing has been my association with Frankie Lennon. I first met her while we were both members of Unity Fellowship Church in Los Angeles. Frankie is a incredible writer, teacher, mentor, & activist. She was instrumental of writing grants and coordinating events for Minority AIDS Project in the early days of the virus when people were dying daily. She is one of those women who stood for those men when they couldn't stand for themselves. Attending funerals weekly and caring & visiting for men whose families had turned against them. Frankie's memoir, "The MEE Street Chronicles" is an incredible collection of stories that cover her youth, family, racial discrimination, sexism. homophobia, coming, out, alcoholism, and many other topics in a straight forward & entertaining way. There's even a story of a middle school adventure with childhood friend Nikki Giovanni who wrote the introduction for the book. For All We Know: In Memory of David Blair & Taylor Siluwe-Speaking Their Names....

I've found myself thinking of the lyrics to the Donny Hathaway song, "For All We Know..." after hearing about the transition of Poet, Spoken Word Artist, & Musician Blair (David Blair) and Author & Blogger Taylor Siluwe.

I first met Blair soon after moving to the bay area. He was here from Detroit featuring at a local spoken word spot. I had never heard of him before but I was blown away by his performance. He was only here for a few days but we managed to sneak in a lunch and have time to talk. Blair is one of those performers that tours constantly so I always assumed our paths would cross again. He was a gifted performer and I love the tone of his voice. I could listen to him read the phone book. Here's a sample of some of his work:

I'm know he will be missed by many other performers and people who grew to know him. Very gentle and warm spirit.

A few weeks ago I woke to read several posts on facebook and other places that Author & Blogger Taylor Siluwe had transitioned. I had never met him but we spoke through messages and IM chats about meeting once I finally made my long planned & hoped for trip to New York. He was one of the first to join the fan page for my book and also sent an encouraging note in support of me getting it published. I loved his blog and his work it was so organic and seemed to come from a place of really trying to inform people. I loved that the way he wrote wasn't just to humor himself or show how smart or talented he was.

I'm the youngest of 10 and had a brother & sister die as well as a niece that I never expected. It just never literally entered the realm of possibility that we would not all grow old together. I'm really understanding how eternal life is not some notion we were taught in traditional religion about heaven or something "over there" but it's like the ancestors told us to speak the names of those we have met in this life so their lives live on....

Both these guys will be missed by many and like I said it really has got me thinking,

Last week I attended, "The Fellowship" Convention in Las Vegas, NV. The Fellowship is a conglomerate of open & affirming churches lead by my Pastor, Bishop Yvette Flunder.

I've attended many workshops, conferences, conventions, & convocations over my life and I've learned to use them as a place of renewal for me. I really needed it I've had a series of disappointments from people not following through on things that they've promised or that we've spoken about. I won't go into detail because honestly I am still bitter about some of it and I don't like being that way. It's something I'm definitely working on. I don't want my look on life to be skewered by hanging my hopes on another person's actions but it is at least for me disappointing & upsetting when people don't do what they said they would do and then avoid contact with you because they haven't especially when you consider those people to be friends/people you love. I have learned it's important to return phone calls, e-mails, and messages. Even if the answer is no and will cause disappointment it's better to know it than to leave things in limbo.

Music has always been a balm for me and during my time at The Fellowship in Las Vegas I got a chance to participate with the National Mass Choir. This is always a highlight for me because there is just something so special about people from different churches coming together to form a choir. Usually you get people who are dedicated to the Music Ministry so there is an extra level of energy. The music for the nightly services was phenomenal! Even Mother Shirley Miller, the partner of Bishop Flunder said she thought it was the best the National Choir has sounded since the beginning of The Fellowship.

One highlight was a tribute to Sylvester by Martha Wash, B. Slade (formerly Tonex), Gene Viale, Bishop Flunder, and the incomparable Charlene Moore who is the National Minister of Music for The Fellowship. Both Martha & Charlene sang background for Sylvester and Bishop Flunder was one of the Associate Pastors at Love Center when he attended services there. Here is a wonderful rendition of one of his most famous songs, "You Are My Friend" by these amazing vocalists:

I saw this video first on facebook and it just made me smile and filled with such joy. This kid is so excited that he's met his first pair of husbands. It's like he found money or something!! Then just as a kid would do let's them know he's going to play ping pong and invites them!

“Touch…Poems & Other Writings of Love, Erotica & Sensuality” by Jair, the Literary Masturbator is a friendly reminder that living and loving is possible. Jair touches us in many ways weaving familiar sounds and sharing intimate stories (real or imagined) to help unify his theme. These poems touch you physically, spiritually and mentally. One of my favorite poems is “When I Look into His Eyes…”

Much like Etheridge Knight’s “Ilu, the Talking Drum”, Jair’s “When I Look into His Eyes…” is filled with sound devices, specifically alliteration and repetition, which help fuse the poem. For example, the speaker states he drowns in “sweet soulful syncopation” (5). A few lines further the speaker describes the sound from a flute as “feather falling freely” (12). In addition, we hear a rhythmic repetitive rumbling of a drum beating with the repetition of the words “Africa” and “drum”. The sounds of life (drumming and heart beating) in and under the poem summon us because they are familiar. Similarly, the refrain used “When I look into his eyes” is a tool that brings us full circle from Africa to America and back again.

Music is consistent throughout his poems and fittingly, Jair injects music into this poem to help tell his tale. Written with a fluid rhythm, the poem is like a song. My favorite line is “A voice calls out, rising above the mixture of sight and sound to create/ joy unbound…in this island found, in the oasis of your soul” (14-15). Their lovemaking is boundless, vulnerable and free.

My jaded ideas of serial monogamy and Knight’s imprisonment in many ways are isolating, however, the process of writing for Knight, Jair and me is a liberating experience. Jair’s book moved me. I was touched and reminded living and loving is possible.-Review by Dauwd Najimi II

on “Remembering Our History: Making Sure the Future Knows What Came Before.”

His talk will focus on the role the media has in preserving history as well as the importance of preserving the media outlets themselves. The talk will take place Saturday, May 28, 2011 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the William Grant Still Arts Center

Bell was founder, publisher and editor of BLK, the nation’s first national monthly newsmagazine focused specifically on the black lesbian and gay community. BLK and its sister publications, Blackfire, Black Lace and Kuumba, ran from 1988 to 1994. Previously Bell had founded Gaysweek, New York City’s first lesbian and gay weekly newspaper.

“Remembering Our History” is part of “Images: Iconic to Insurgent & Devine to Decadent,”
an exhibition of Los Angeles black lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender historical artifacts from 1940 to the present accompanied by lectures, panel discussions, literary performances and film screenings. “Images,” a presentation of the Black LGBT Project founded by C. Jerome Woods, runs through July 9, 2011. Admission is free.

Jerome Woods brings IMAGES: ... to William Grant Still Arts Center.This unique exhibit gives insight into the public and private lives of same gender loving people, a segment of our community that is often disregarded, made invisible, harassed, shunned and misunderstood. Moreover, it highlights the consciousness, contributions and acceptance of LGBT people and their significant others in community, culture and society.

The exhibition includes archival material from Woods' personal collection as well as contributions from the Stanley Bennett Clay Collection, Los Angeles Black Pride/ATB, Reverend Russell Thornhill, Mrs. Claudia Spears, Greg McNeal, Barry Stinson, Dale Guy Madison, Alan Bell, Jewel Thais-Williams, Archbishop Carl Bean, Alden Kimbrough and others.

IMAGES: runs thru July 9. It is a collection of photographs, personal stories, recorded interviews, rare magazines, books, correspondence and much more. It highlights visual art by BLGBT artists Duane Paul, Mira Gandy, Victory and Byrd Bettis. Dear Artist,

Spectacular: The Art Exhibition is an invitation to emerging and established Black LGBT artists and their supporters to present world class works of art. Our vision is to "fire the human imagination with works of art that inspires, uplifts, and celebrates the LGBT experience". Our mission will be to "provide a platform for trend-setting artists from the LGBT community and their associates whose paintings, sculpture, graphic, and literary arts display a level of excellence that were hallmarks of the Harlem Renaissance era , but relevant to our time".

Over a four day period, in a nine thousand square foot space, ten selected artists will be invited to exhibit powerful concepts in painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and photography.

The event is the At the Beach (ATB) Los Angeles Black Pride 2011. This annual festival draws thousands of LGBT people from across the country, and across the seas. The venue for the exhibition is the Catalina Room at the beautiful Los Angeles Air Port Radisson Hotel.We can be assured that most people who will attend this year's ATB event will come to experience the magic of the longest running Black Pride event in the country. This celebration means only one thing...come ready to party! This year's theme is "So Caliente!", and it promises to be hot.

To encourage public participation, organizers of Spectacular: The Art Exhibit will continue with a steady campaign of outreach which includes emails, flyers, postcards and banners that will lead up to the event.

To encourage artist participation, we recommend that those selected should extend invitations to their patrons, fans, followers, and to anyone who may have the potential and interest to purchase their art. If sales are not made directly from an artists' higher priced collection, our retail outlet at the exhibition, will provide the artists' affordable art for visitors who came to view the exhibit and also feel moved to purchase what they can afford.

So if you haven't heard by now. I have a book available called, "Touch...Poems & Other Writings of Love, Erotica, & Sensuality. It's a self published book so I am handling all the promotion and marketing on my own. I got some royalties from the book and was excited. Not because of the amount but just because people took time order it.

With the royalties I was able make a donation to Yolo Akili and his efforts to raise money for his one man show. Yolo has an incredible video that brings to mind some of the work that first inspired me in, "Tounges Untied"

I was also able to purchase a copy of Michael Christopher's, "Man:Black" This is a beautiful collection of photography by the same guy that brought us the graphic novel, "Living The Life" and the books "From Top To Bottom" and "Unspeakable."

I began to think how having those royalties afforded me the opportunity to promote Ujamaa. Using Cooperative Economics to support other artists work and endeavors. So I wanted to use this blog as way of showing other work that is out there that I'd like for others to consider buying. Frankie Lennon is a dear friend, mentor, teacher, and long time activist. Her book, "The MEE Street Chronicles is a collection of stories from different parts of her life that takes you on an incredible journey. Her writing is some of the finest craft I have read in my entire life. I got to see some of these stories transform as I worked with Frankie in a writing circle she asked me to help her lead called, "The Talking Drum." At first I resisted because I thought her skill as a writer far surpassed mine but with her encouragement I agreed to do it and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Being with her made me a better writer.

Kevin Taylor amazes me. I don't know how he does it all. Pastor, Activist, Writer, Host, and so many other things. He has 2 novels and 2 Self Improvement Books. Again I don't know how he does it all but he does it well and enthusiastically.

Kobe Bryant & When Sorry Isn't Enough (According To Some People)

It's no secret that I am a life long Laker fan and also a fan of Kobe Bryant. Well the other night Kobe was caught with his ignorance showing. He called a referee a, "Fucking Fa****". I knew when it was caught on camera he would pay dearly in the court of public opinion. Of course Kobe doesn't have the best public persona to begin with. Because of the rape trial he was involved in and also the perception of him being arrogant with some people he will never win.

That being said I read a post on facebook that really spiraled out of control. Some of the people called him an asshole, others referred to the rape trial (which lead me to believe that the only things they know about him are that and this incident), one called for "outrage" whatever that is, others made references to if someone used the "n" word with him and I understand all that but the vitriol is really what amazed me. I am in no way supporting what he did and find what he did highly detestable but I also realize all of us have moments when we say or do things that are not the best display of who we are. So I posted a comment amongst the others that said:

It could be as a human he said something that was wrong and out of place because of his ignorance of not knowing how offensive it is. I'm sure none of us in the "GLBT" community have ever done that. Especially the ones with on-line profiles that use stuff like, "no fat, no fems"

I actually expected a backlash of people saying things and I was prepared for it but not only did no one say anything they acted as if I hadn't posted it at all. Just totally ignored it and kept on with the rants. It lead me to believe that the discussion wasn't so much about Kobe but just having a place to state your opinion without taking responsibility for it. Much like Kobe did, but he didn't get to hide behind the internet to do it. He got caught.

Last year during the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics my nephew who like the rest of my family are die hard Laker fans posted a picture of Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett holding up their jerseys and instead of their names on the back it had the words, "We Are Fags" I left a comment on the picture that said, "As a Laker fan it's mildly funny, as a Same Gender Loving man and your Uncle I find this offensive." My nephew apologized and took the picture down. I understood because I know my nephew was trying to make a joke that didn't work and even though it wasn't my job to put him in his place I did take it as on opportunity to let him know how such things can be hurtful.

Since the incident Kobe has been levied a fine of $100,000 and apologized but people have said it wasn't a real apology and it didn't go far enough. As I stated someone said, "there should be outrage" but of course I'm not sure what they meant by that.

Again I am not trying to defend Kobe's actions or cut him some slack but there should be some sort of human decency and respect given when someone says the wrong thing unless of course you've never done it. I for one know I have done and said some things that I deeply and truly am sorry for, one can only hope you are not defined by that and it becomes your legacy....

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

At least once a year I HAVE to see the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. Last night I made the pilgrimage with my friend and Co-Worker Leda, along with the crazy and entertaining Alvis Ward. Alvis is a dancer and goes to see the Company on multiple nights. I also ran into a great guy and artist in his own right, Cedric Brown.

Leda of course was excited because she'd only seen the Company on television. We were seated in row D so had a close up view of everything on stage. Tuesday night's program included, "Anointing", "Cry", "The Hunt", and ended with the timeless classic, "Revelations". I spoken and written at length about how transformative, "Revelations" has been in my life. The highlight for me was a West Coast Premiere of a ballet by new creative director Robert Battle. It was one of the most exciting and intriguing dances I have seen in years. Here's a short sample but it is something that MUST be seen and experienced

Another highlight of course was the closing of the show but before the final dance there was a short film about Revelations turning 50. Short interviews with Mr. Ailey himself & outgoing Creative Director Judith Jamison along with clips of them dancing the piece themselves really touched me.

I'll be back again and again to see the Ailey Company. It's something that is just in my DNA!!

Congratulations to MISSISSIPPI DAMNED Cinematographer, Bradford Young - Winner of the 2011 Sundance Excellence in Cinematography Award

Congratulations to Bradford Young for his recent and much deserved accomplishment. On Saturday, January 29th he received the 2011 Sundance Film Festival Excellence in Cinematography Award for his work on the highly acclaimed PARIAH directed by Dee Rees. The film recently acquired worldwide theatrical distribution so make sure you support the film when it comes to your city!

Below is an excerpt of an interview Bradford did about his work on MISSISSIPPI DAMNED. Enjoy!

Q: What was working on Mississippi Damned like?

A:It was lots of fun and definitely a big challenge. When you have a 109-page script, 30 plus actors, emotional material, and only 22 days to shoot, it requires everyone to pull together to get the film done. Thankfully, there were great collaborations on all fronts, from working with Tina as the writer/director to the production designer, Aiyana Trotter to our producers, Morgan Stiff and Lee Stiff. Everyone across the board and in all departments were dedicated to making the film the best it could possibly be. That is a great environment to be in, one where you know everyone is working toward the same goal and is using their particular skill or craft to make the end product the best it can be. In the end, working on Mississippi Damned was a rite of passage for me.

Q: How was the visual style for Mississippi Damned developed?

A: Tina and I spent a lot of time discussing how we wanted the film to look and feel. Early on in the process we visited our actual locations to start brainstorming and developing an overall look. We decided early on that the story lent itself to a documentary approach. We knew that would help create the visceral feel the story needed. I often used and sought out available lighting and a majority of the film is handheld camerawork. Photographs by Birney Imes and films like 21 Grams became templates for the style we were trying to achieve.

Q: What lead you into cinematography? What would you say to aspiring Cinematographers?

A:I started off as a still photographer, then moved to shooting documentaries and then starting shooting films. My advice would be to be yourself. The best tool for being a good cinematographer is knowing who you are and where you come from because that influences everything, the way you see light and frames. Know thyself!

Friends Don't Let Friends Blog (FB Status, Tweet) Drunk (With Misinformation)....Remember Haiti A Year After....

On this past Saturday there was an attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona. I watched the break in regular programming on television and also as I do occasionally looked at what was happening on the social networking site facebook.

It amazes me how many people posted about the shooting but what surprised me more is the number of people who consider themselves journalistic sources and began to post details that were not confirmed. Congresswoman Giffords was pronounced dead and resurrected so many times I joked that Jesus got jealous. It really struck me that these people especially the ones who were getting information from the same news sources that I was felt that it was their duty to report this news. I began to think of her husband who was in Houston and had to make his way to Arizona having to hear about his wife being dead. One local politician that was a close friend of Congresswoman Gifford expressed it was like an emotional rollercoaster because she had to hear several times her friend had died and then was not dead.

Maybe I made too much of it but I just felt like there could've have been a better way to let people know. I know social networking has drastically changed the way we get information but it should never take the place of having credible information from reliable sources. I know some of the media outlets also reported that she was dead and then retracted the statement several times but to continually use social networking forums as if you are reporting from the scene just seems a bit irresponsible to me.

People also saw the irony of the Congresswoman being shot and Sarah Palin on her political action committee website using a target/crosshairs symbol over her district. While I do think it was irresponsible for her to do that I don't think it's the sole reason this tragedy happen. Some people tried to make the shooter the bastard child of Palin and Glenn Beck. Again we have to share our opinions responsibly. The internet in a lot of places becomes a platform for people to say anything they want because they can hide behind their computer screens but it also has become a place where anyone thinks their opinion is the only one that matters. That they are the only source of information and that's simply not true. Even this blog is just my take on the situation. Anyone who reads it is free to agree or disagree.

One thing did strike me about the incident. There was a young girl who went there to meet the Congresswoman because she had recently been elected to her student council and had a burgeoning interest in politics. She was taken there by a neighbor. My heart goes out especially to her parents but all to experienced the violence. I did hear the gun sales have gone up since Saturday in Arizona which doesn't surprise me unfortunately. The Arizona State Legislature passed an emergency law banning people from protesting at a funeral or burial because members of Westboro Baptist Church were planning to use this another platform to spew their version of Christianity.

Today also happens to be the one year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti. Words alone can not express how much help Haiti still needs. I read someone say that Haiti needs to become self-sufficient which I agree with but when the starting point is so far back it's hard for me not to want to do whatever I can to help.

Mighty Real: An Anthology of African American Same Gender Loving Writing

I got my Contributor's Copy of, "Mighty Real" yesterday. I have an essay in it titled, 'Let The Healing Begin." After opening I ran my fingers across the covers and just held it close to me trying to absorb all the words through my pores. From The Harlem Renaissance through 60's Revolution. On the shoulders of Richard Bruce Nugent, James Baldwin, Assato Saint, Audre Lorde, Nella Larsen, Essex Hemphill, Joseph Beam, and many many others we stand in this new collection....and AIN'T WE FIERCE!!

I began reading some of the other contributions by friends and others I know and had it reminded me how talented they are. Sometimes I forget because they are my friend but I was definitely in the presence of artistic brilliance.

There are some writers I don't know personally and others I have recently become acquainted with in that grand scheme of social networking called, "facebook" but I am looking forward to taking a few days of being with myself and just reading what is we have contributed to our community as griots and gatekeepers.

This extensive collection includes poetry, short stories, plays, essays, sermons, & interviews. Edited by Royce Bryant Smith & Darius Omar Williams I know it has been a long process of conception and birth and I personally am grateful to, "be in the number." Both Darius and Royce deserve our thanks and congratulations for a job not just well done but one that goes over and above.

Please do yourself a favor and add this to your personal library and suggest it to friends near and far. If you are a celebrant of Kwanzaa it would make a great zawadi. You may not receive it by Jan 1st the day gifts are exchanged but in the spirit of Kwanzaa this is a gift that will uplift and illuminate.

Ban On Gay Blood Donations: Go To Helen Weytt!!!

When I was in college all the clubs, organizations, and fraternities used to have a contest to see who could donate the most blood each semester. It was one of the most popular events throughout the year. There was fierce competition not just so we could get extra many for our groups but because we knew donating blood was a great way to help other people in crisis.

A dear friend and colleague Stephanie Nawyn who is now an Associate Professor of Sociology at Michigan State University, and was a great help to me when I coordinated the Lorde-Baldwin Learning Tree a literacy program at Unity Fellowship Church in Los Angeles (I remember when she had her first child Henry and he would sit on my lap and try and put the tips of my locs in his mouth)

Time flies, Henry is now riding his bike to school
and has a sister Meredeth who I have yet to meet.

Enough of the memory lane. Some of Stephanie's students have posted an excellent video on youtube about the ban on Same Gender Loving/Men Who Have Sex With Men being able to donate blood. They offer great insight & information about why the ban was put into place originally and the reasons it should be overturned.

Support comes from Senator John Kerry as well as others and they give you address and information on how to contact the FDA if you'd like to send a letter on how to overturn the ban and also to Go To Helen Weytt ("Hell & Wait") if you'd like to support the current ban. All this from their own Fox-E News Special Report....

It hurts me deeply that I am no longer allowed to donate blood and I know it could help save lives. Please view this and take action....

Scottsboro Boys Closing...

I was really hoping that this musical would be able to sustain an audience and eventually tour. I first heard about it because I am a big fan of Colman Domingo. I'd seen him in, "The Big Gay Sketch Comedy Show" where among other things his Craiglist's ads as Maya Angelou and also the musical, "Passing Strange" I always thought the story of the Scottsboro Boys was an interesting time in America's history. It wasn't a story I was even aware of in school. It's not covered in many history books but it's definitely a familiar story if you have roots in the south. Because of the death of Fred Ebb this was to be the last collaboration for Kander & Ebb who wrote such musicals as Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Chicago, The Rink, and others. With their use of dark material as a source for musical theater and the addition of Susan Strohman I really thought this show would have a long run. But it is closing this Sunday December 12. The soundtrack which includes one of my new favorite songs, "Go Back Home" is available on-line at amazon.com and cduniverse.com

Art Isn't Easy....: Thoughts on For Colored Girls, Tyler Perry, & Upcoming Books...

I was planning to go see, "For Colored Girls" this weekend until I read the opinions of a few people I really respect for their thoughts on things artistic. I should say I am not a Tyler Perry fan. I don't think I ever will be. I think the best thing he ever did was produce, "Precious" so it would get a bigger audience. I was hoping that would be the situation with, "For Colored Girls" but I learned he directed I was still going to see it because of my love for the original work. I've decided I'm still going to see it just for the opportunity to hear Ntozake Shange's words performed by some of my favorite actresses like Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Kerri Washington, Thandie Newton, and others. What I've decided to do though is order the dvd of a production that starred Alfre Woodard, Lynn Whitfield, Carol Malliard (of Sweet Honey in the Rock), Shange, and the theme song sung by Patti Labelle and watch it after I see the film.

What has struck me the most is the vitriolic response not so much to the film but to Tyler Perry. As I said I am not a fan of his work but whatever my personal feelings toward that I try and stay away from personal attacks on him. I have my own reasons for why I don't like his work but some of the things that I have read from others really border on being mean spirited. If you don't like someone's work that's one thing but to attack their character and not know them (and seeing them on interviews is not knowing them, that's only a glimpse of them) is not good reporting to me. I have made my peace with going to see this work and am looking forward to whatever happens having a good experience.

I began hearing about a new musical, "Scottsboro Boys" by Kander & Ebb earlier this year because I had become "friends" with Colman Domingo on facebook. I saw him first on the, "Big Gay Comedy Sketch Show" on the logo network. The show itself has some really great moments and some not so great but a guilty pleasure of mine is him reading craigslist posting as Maya Angelou....

When he looks to the heavens after reading the postings which I suspect are real text I just lose it. I then saw him on PBS with the broadway production of, "Passing Strange." An incredible show that I think everyone should get on dvd. Currently Scottsboro Boys has moved to Broadway and I really hope it does well enough to tour. I haven't admitted this publicly to many people but I have started playing piano again and I would love to learn this song.

It sounds so touching and beautiful. I even suggested it to a great friend of mine Haqumai Sharpe as something he should add to his repertoire. The show is based on the notorious case of the Scottsboro Boys who were accused of raping two white women on a train passing through Scottsboro, Alabama. Told in the minstrel form it should be an interesting take on a night in musical theater. Leave it to Kander & Ebb to come up with a way to share another "dark" story. Susan Stroman directs and choreographs and from what I've seen and heard adds some incredibly subtle moments to the production.

Thanks to all who have supported me on this journey. As most of us creative types know Art Isn't Easy. You can plan but then life shows up and takes away your plans and ideas of what you want to happen but I can tell you honestly everything about this project is in divine order. My friend Anthony Batiste used his considerable talents to design the covers and the models and photographers who let me use their work have been especially supportive. Take a look!! I am blown away but what we created!!!

I'm also pleased to announce a piece I wrote called, "Let The Healing Begin" will be included in anthology due out soon called, "Mighty Real" edited by Darius Omar Williams & Royce Bryant Smith. I originally wrote the piece as a speech given at the National Convocation of the Unity Fellowship Movement. I really enjoyed it and didn't know what to do with it and ended up submitted it to this anthology. I am very honored to be a part of the collection and looking forward to its debut.

A Review: I Was Born This Way by Archbishop Carl Bean

I consider myself a, "Church Boy" and by default a, "Preacher's Kid" (my mother married my step-father a Pastor when I was around 12yrs old). Some of my earliest memories are of church and family, family and church. From my grand-father who was Chairman of the Deacon Board so long they gave him the title of, "Deacon Emeritus", my mother who became President of both the Baptist Minister's Wives & Widows Union & the Interdenominational Minister's Wives & Widows Fellowship, to my being a choir director all stemmed from being in church.

Being Same-Gender Loving in the black church can be difficult to manuever. Talk about Don't Ask-Don't Tell it became increasingly difficult when I thought I might be ready to come out but then the AIDS crisis struck. People were very liberal in their condemnation. Folks were being baptized with the label, "abomination", and the disease was being seen as punishment for the "gay lifestyle".

After a long journey and a determination to break free I stopped attending church for a long while. I thought if I were gay I had to give it up. Sunday morning became my religion but I never lost faith. For some reason I knew there was something I hadn't been taught, something was missing. I knew the love of God as much as I knew there was air, oxygen flowing through my lungs but I'd always been taught like many people that there was only one way to God, sinners were going to hell, and a multitude of other hogwash that was used to control & oppress people.

I began reading on my own but still missed the fellowship that a church can offer. After volunteering for a program called, "Shanti" I began to hear about Unity Fellowship Church. I'd heard of Carl Bean but wasn't very familiar with him or his work. Imagine my surprise that when I finally decided to visit the church which at the time was located on Jefferson two blocks west of La Brea that is was 10 minutes from where I lived. All I had to do was turn a corner and what I'd been searching for was there (there's a metaphor for life in there somewhere).

Bishop Bean wasn't there the first Sunday I attended but because I wasn't sure where the church was I got there early and the first person I met was a man named, "Deacon Charles" he was very nice and sat and talked with me while we waited for services to begin. Charles was bald, very effeminate, had eyebrows drawn on, and pearl earrings. Although he was nice I was thinking, "what have I gotten myself into?". His kindness and sincerity though were just what I needed when it came to connecting. Once service began I heard testimonies of other people, the sanctuary began to fill, and then choir marched in singing, "Walk In The Light". The processional was lead by Vera Owens who I'd recognized from Pentecostal Community Choir and the Southern California Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. The song really ministered to me. When the lights went down for affirmation and the worship leader began to tell us we were made in God's image, that we were not a mistake, that God loved us all I wanted to cry but I am not one for crying in public too much so I held it in. I received a pamphlet as a visitor that day that outlined the church's mission and ministry. It listed how God was present in all religions and faith traditions. I knew then this is what I had been looking for.

A few weeks later I finally met Bishop Bean. He is a force of nature. One of those people that when he enters a room the level of energy automatically rises. Whether it's his laugh, his voice being raised in song, or his preaching he lifts you. Even in quiet moments of consultation he has the ability to make you feel as if your situation is the most important to him. He's a man of action and of great faith. I do not think there is any coincidence that he and my mother share the same birth date of May 26th.

A few years before I left Southern California and moved up to the bay area a fellow Unity Fellowship Member, Frankie Lennon was running a writing workshop called, "The Talking Drum". She asked me to help facilitate the group. At first I was intimidated. Frankie is an incredible writer and teacher. I am not sure if I can call her a contemporary of Nikki Goivanni she actually went to and got in trouble with her in grade school. She encouraged me to become a part and I am so happy I did. She has since become a great friend and confidante. A true unexpected treasure in my life. While we were running the workshop Bishop Bean who always encouraged my writing, performing, and other artistic endeavors began to tell me he had been approached to write a book. I told him I thought it was a wonderful idea. The way he can weave a story is magical. With his wide range of knowledge and incredible history I knew it would be great reading.

That book is finally here, "I Was Born This Way: A Gay Preacher's Journey Through Gospel Music, Disco Stardom, and a Ministry in Christ" came out as loud and bold as Archbishop is. I don't think he can ever be accused of being a shrinking violet and in that respect he doesn't shrink from revealing much of history that has inlcuded alot of pain but certainly it also tells of how he has triumphed. His stories of childhood abuse, attempted suicide, cross dressing, prostitution, drug use, foster care, family dysfunctions can seem overwhelming but with this book you get a great sense of the purpose of Archbishop Bean. He always had faith. He always knew there was something. One of his great gifts is to be able to speak to a large crowd but make it seem he is speaking to you. He doesn't have to "talk up" to educated people, or "talk down" who haven't had the chance for education. He just somehow magically is able to translate a message through the power & passion of his words. I consider him to be one of the finest theologians of our time.

I've spoken to him about ways to promote the book. I told him I thought he should get a few musicians, background singers, and go into deeper detail about some of the stories in the book. If he sang and did that there is no way people wouldn't be moved to buy it. Just a couple of weeks ago I visited Unity on my birthday and got a chance to speak and pray with him. He always remains in the pulpit after service for anyone who'd like to have prayer or consultation with him. He told me some of the details of performing, "I Was Born This Way" at the height of disco era at a club in West Hollywood where his friends were asked for 3 forms of ID to get in. Even though the story is also told in the book hearing it from his mouth with his embellishments had me laughing out loud!! He also told me about his group, Carl Bean & Universal Love. There's a picture of them on the back cover and in the book. He had me laughing how they had to snap the picture quick because the guys in the group were trying to look, "butch". The only straight member of the group chose to be shirtless.

Archbishop is a wealth of knowledge and history. Hearing him talk about his calling to help people of color in the early days of the HIV/AIDS crisis helps me to always re-focus on what I've been called to do.

I could go on and on about Archbishop Bean. I always enjoy our exchanges. He continues to inspire, teach, and mentor me to this day. I asked him to sign my copy of the book and his inscription reads, To Jair, My brother is in Christ and in the Creative Arts. Love Archbiship Carl Bean.
I'm honored he includes me in his fellowship and I am honored to have him as part of mine...

As soon as I heard, "Dreamgirls" the current tour was coming to San Francisco I knew I wanted to be in the audience. There are certain shows that I have HAVE to see. Dreamgirls is one of those. This production did not disappoint. In fact it enhanced my love and appreciation for this work.

I've known about Dreamgirls since the original production and have always been in love with it. Through the '87 tour which featured one of my favorite performers, Lillias White, all the talk of the movie, a concert version, and then finally the movie. There is nothing like live theater that proves that when art & entertainment collide there is magic.

The cast was incredible, the production was amazing, and the audience receptive and appreciative. I told a friend if I were a smart man I would've bought a second set of tickets so I could see it again before it left town.

In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the GLBT Historical Society is holding a series of important conversations across generations. As the first event in the Silver Anniversary Speakers Series, co-presented by MoAD, we are proud to present activist, educator, former political prisoner and leader of the Black Panther Party, Ericka Huggins, in conversation with UC Berkeley doctoral student in Social and Cultural Studies in Education, Ronald K. Porter. In addition to his dissertation research, which traces the intellectual history of African-American educational thought, Porter is conducting work on how the Black Panther Party considered both the nature and elimination of lesbian and gay oppression. Ericka and Ronald will discuss perspectives on LGBTQ history, the Black Panther Party’s relationship with the Gay Liberation Movement, sustaining activism, and promoting social justice. This conversation is critical not only to illuminate how black organizations of the past focused on the issue of sexuality, but also how such actions help us understand the connections between race and sexuality in today’s political climate.

Damage Caused In Downtown Oakland Is Not By Protesters Of The Johannes Mehserle Verdict

I want to state for emphatically & for the record that the damage caused by people last night in Oakland, Ca was not at the hands of people protesting the Johannes Mehserle verdict.

There was a peaceful gathering of 800-1000 people at the corner of 14th & Broadway beginning after the verdict was read until approximately 7:30pm. Several young people spoke as did community members, leaders, Oscar Grant I (Oscar Grant's Grandfather), Oakland Native Mark Curry of "Hanging With Mr. Cooper" fame, and many who were around in the days of the Black Panthers. There were people from a variety of backgrounds, faith traditions, and political ideas.

The damage and looting that occurred was done mostly by people who are not Oakland residents (at least 70% are from outside the area) and they just wanted a reason to loot (the 1st store attacked was a Foot Locker) and engage in lawlessness. These people covered their faces because they are cowards and used Oscar Grant's name & memory in vain.

Do not continue to follow media coverage that wants to only show what happened after night fell. It is misguided and skewed to create sensationalism & perpetuate stereotypes.

I attended the rally and held a friend as she cried. Listened to young people beg for answers and heard voices raised in call to action. I am not a native of Oakland. I became a resident just over 3 years ago and have come to love my city.

Mehserle trial. We run a legal hotline during protests and provide free or low-cost legal support for demonstrations and for people expressing dissent by organizing radical volunteer lawyers and legal workers around specific causes. Ugandan Bishop to Visit Bay Area to Speak Against the "Kill the Gays" Movement

Next week, Bishop Christopher Senyonjo of Uganda will be visiting the San Francisco-Bay Area.

Anglican Bishop Senyonjo is considered the Desmond Tutu of Uganda for his LGBT inclusive ministry and stance against the very real 'Kill the Gays' movement in Uganda. The Bishop is on a U.S. speaking tour principally sponsored by Integrity USA, a 35 year old Episcopalian LGBT organization.

Bishop Christopher Senyonjo is a 78 year old grandfather of 11, and has been married for over 30 years. Because of his LGBT inclusive ministry and stance against the policies of genocide of LGBT people, he has been stripped of his Bishop status by the Church of Uganda. Upon his return to Uganda, he faces arrest and imprisonment.

Defying Gravity...

This past Thursday evening I got a chance to see one of my all time favorite singing groups, "Sweet Honey In The Rock". I've posted many times about them and their music so I won't go into too much detail, but just know I think they are the ultimate when it comes to performing music with a message as well as being entertaining.

On yesterday Friday I got to be a vocal workshop with one of the founding members Louise Robinson.

She had performed a full concert the night before and the group also had performed for school children on the morning of the workshop. Admittedly tired she gave so much of herself as a teacher and person in our workshop we all left floating, yes defying gravity.

It was a group of about 40 people. I was only one of the two men there but it didn't matter it was all about connecting to the "Beingness" of the experience. I met some amazing people and look forward to sharing with them in the future.

We used our bodies, our voices, and creativity to share ourselves as people and artists. The group consisted of singers of all levels and backgrounds but everyone shared in the experience.

After leaving I realized how much I love art, performing, and sharing. She really inspired me to continue on. I can't say I was having doubts but it's always great to get a nudge of inspiration and some confirmation that you are on the right path!

Adjectives would no longer be cells in my body bringing much needed oxygen to my brain

I'd be insane

Screaming similes, like obscenities in a straight jacket—locked in an asylum-curled up in the fetal position

I CAN'T FEEL MY METAPHORS!!

EMT's would have to try and resuscitate me ...pressing those paddles to my chest

When you define yourself by an art form like poetry, when it's who you are

What would happen if that were taken away?

I'd feel confined like one of the Africans on a ship during the middle passage
My drums, history, and everything I knew...ripped from me, shackled-loaded on in the belly of a boat, surrounded by people I couldn't communicate with because we didn't speak the same language-because we're not from the same tribe...sort of like someone who can't pay their mortgage, talking to an investment banker...

I'd be like a slave...singing schoolhouse rock songs as if they were negro spirituals...coded messages to help me plan escape or rise up in revolt...

I'd paraphrase Patrick Henry--”Give Me Poetry Or Give Me Death!!”

And... Ancestors Have Welcomed A New Angel...

A few years ago I walked into a place that would totally change my life. It was/is called "PoetsJazzHouse". When I went that first night I didn't expect to meet people who would become my friends and inspiration.

Even though she wasn't there on that night Nikki Dillard but she was at the time with Derek Shaun the co-host of the show.

We all became family. If we were to assign roles "Nikki 1" as she was called would have been the sassy sister. She could do poetry, sing, act, and many other things. She had the habit of finding a popular song and changing the lyrics to introduce the regulars. She came up with a Jill Scot joint for me without knowing that at the time Jill Scott was my favorite artist. She just had an innate sense of what worked. She even composed a song to warn guests about noise from cell phones. It was to the tune of Kate Vigo's, "The Way I Are/The Doo Doo Song"

I am standing on the stage
And I need your full attention
No more talking paper rattling
Other things I need to mention
And if your cell phone happens to ring, don't say hello!
There's some refreshments in the back, and leave some money at the do!

Nikki also set the tone for, "After 10" poetry. We used to have students who were younger than 18 come from JobCorps and because we didn't want to influence them any erotic poetry was done after 10pm--after intermission when the students had left for the evening. One of her classics was about eating a "Frosty" ice cream. It was Hot! It was because of Nikki I was liberated to write my signature piece, "Literary Masturbator"

Nikki was a warm and loving woman who I will never forget. Her legacy will definitely live on...

WASHINGTON - The Lakers took a field trip Monday afternoon. They met President Barack Obama and visited the White House as his guests in the East Room, smiling and laughing like giddy school children instead of NBA champions.

Obama hosted the Lakers players, coaches, staff and executives and assorted friends and family. He gave them a few chuckles and they gave him a gold-and-purple Lakers jersey with his name on the back and a signed basketball.

Jeanie Buss and Magic Johnson represented the Lakers' ownership. General manager Mitch Kupchak joined them and the Lakers players and coaching staff. They all stood on risers behind the president, who spoke from behind a podium.

Gold drapes adorned the ballroom, which made it feel all the more comfortable for the Lakers. Obama seemed at ease while praising Kobe Bryant and Lakers coach Phil Jackson and bantering with Johnson.

The president also took a moment to thank Jordan Farmar, Derek Fisher and Pau Gasol for their efforts in raising money for earthquake victims in Haiti. He shook hands with everyone on the stage and also greeted Bryant's daughters, Natalia and Gianna.

"I'm especially excited to meet Coach Phil Jackson, the Zen Master," Obama said during a 15-minute ceremony. "I've been a fan of Coach Jackson's ever since his days running the triangle offense in Chicago (Obama's adopted hometown).

"I want to congratulate him on his 10th NBA championship - the most in history. I do want to point out that six of them came with the Bulls." Obama then pantomimed Michael Jordan's classic layup in which he switched the ball from one hand to the other while in midair during the 1991 NBA Finals, when Jordan and the Bulls defeated Johnson and the Lakers.

"You remember that, Magic?" Obama said. Johnson laughed and said, "Yes, sir."

Later, downstairs in the Diplomatic Reception Room, a laughing Johnson told Lakers beat reporters he wanted to make a snappy retort, but thought better of trading trash-talk with "the most powerful man in the world."

"I got a kick out of that," Johnson said. "You know, what can you say when the President of the United States can trash- talk you? Normally, I have a pretty good comeback, but this time I had to let him slide.

"I had to let him slide, because he was right, Michael did do an incredible move."

Johnson said he was every bit as excited Monday as during his first visit to the White House while playing with the Lakers during the Showtime Era of the 1980s.

Many of the same feelings flooded over him as he waited to meet Obama.

"I was sweating just like I was sweating back then," Johnson said. "You were sweating to meet him. Sweating to shake his hand. Sweating because this is a great moment. I knew how special this moment was for all these guys. "It's a great day for them as young men. It's a great day for the organization. We'll see if we can get back here again. I don't think we'll ever have a president with as much basketball knowledge, with as much basketball skills and yet still run the world."

Obama praised Bryant, quoted Lamar Odom and wished Chicago native Shannon Brown well in the dunk contest during the NBA's All-Star Weekend next month.

Obama also lamented the fact that he was no longer an effective player now that he's nearly 49.

Before the ceremony began, Bryant said Obama spoke with the players "about sports, about Shannon winning the dunk contest. We talked about the Bulls. We talked about the Lakers. We talked about my (broken) finger. We talked about doing it again. He kind of came up to everybody individually and shook hands."

During the ceremony, Obama quoted Odom from the NBA Finals last June, recalling the versatile sixth man's words of unity while the Lakers chased the championship that eluded them when they lost to the Boston Celtics in 2008.

"We all kind of always saw that light," Obama recalled Odom saying after the Lakers dispatched the Orlando Magic in five games last June.

Obama also praised Bryant for playing at such a high level despite suffering a fractured right index finger last month.

"Of course, I have to recognize Kobe Bryant, one of the most competitive players I have ever seen," Obama said. "If I had a broken finger, I would have trouble getting out of bed in the morning."

Asked if his teammates appreciated the significance of the visit, Bryant nodded.

"Lamar is very emotional," Bryant said. "He actually went to see Obama speak at the Democratic Convention in Denver (in 2008). He was very emotional about that, so I know everybody understands the significance of it. It's great to see him."

Serena Williams Auctions Clothes For Haiti

Serena Williams has turned her punishment into a charitable opportunity by launching an online auction of her personal clothing and memorabilia in order to raise $92,000 for Haiti earthquake victims, as well as schools and charities.

The target equals Williams total fine for her profanity-laced outburst at a lineswoman during her semifinal loss to Kim Clijsters at the U.S. Open in September.

“The purpose of the mission is to turn a negative into a positive by educating and helping women, men and children so that they have a fighting chance,” Williams writes on the Web site of her charity, the Serena Williams Foundation.

Williams’ eBay auction began Monday with items including an autographed pair of sneakers that she wore in her championship run at the Australian Open last year, her 2008 Olympic team dress and a Phoenix Suns jersey signed by Steve Nash.

She announced the auction in December, shortly after she was fined a record $82,500 by the Grand Slam tournament for her profanity-laced outburst at a lineswoman during her semifinal loss to Kim Clijsters at the U.S. Open in September. She also paid a $10,000 penalty to the U.S. Tennis Association.

Williams said the idea for the auction came after the International Tennis Federation denied her request to donate some of her fine to charity.

The auction will run for 92 days, with new items up for sale each week.

The proceeds were originally designated for schools in the United States and Africa, but Williams decided last week to direct some of the money to victims of Haiti’s devastating earthquake.

NEW YORK -- 2009 Sprite Slam Dunk champion Nate Robinson of the New York Knicks will attempt to become the first three-time winner of the competition when he defends his title on NBA All-Star Saturday Night, Feb. 13, at American Airlines Center (8 p.m. ET on TNT) in Dallas. Robinson will compete against the Charlotte Bobcats' Gerald Wallace and the Los Angeles Lakers' Shannon Brown.

The 2010 Sprite Slam Dunk participants were unveiled today at a special event at New York's Pennsylvania Station, where artist Dan Dunn brought each player's image to life in a speed painting display on giant canvases.

The Toronto Raptors' DeMar DeRozan and the Los Angeles Clippers' Eric Gordon will compete in the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk-In, a single-round slam dunk competition that will be held at halftime of the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam on Friday, Feb. 12. Fans will be able to vote via SMS text message and at NBA.com to determine who will advance to the Sprite Slam Dunk the following night.

In Phoenix last year, Robinson, who also won the event in 2006 in Houston, edged defending champion Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic, and in the process converted a dunk that became an instant classic. Robinson, who won the 2006 event by dunking over 1986 champ Spud Webb, used Howard as a prop this time around, slamming the ball through the hoop after leaping over the 6-11 center. Robinson's final dunk was a reverse alley-oop off the bounce that he brought down to his knees before stuffing it through.

"From capes and kryptonite to blowing out candles and leaping over legends, Sprite Slam Dunk has produced some of the most creative moments in NBA All-Star history," said Ellen Lucey, director, sports marketing, Coca-Cola North America. "It's only fitting that we reveal this year's dunkers with a spark of creativity as Nate, Gerald and Shannon prepare to wow fans by pushing their performance to new heights in Dallas."

The only back-to-back Slam Dunk champions were Chicago's Michael Jordan (1987, 1988) and the Golden State Warriors' Jason Richardson (2002, 2003). The only other two-time winners were Atlanta's Dominique Wilkins (1985, 1990) and Miami's Harold Minor (1993, 1995).

The two dunkers with the highest first round scores will advance to the final round. The dunker with the lowest total score from the first round will compete first in the final round. Dunks then will alternate until each player has completed two. Time limit rules still apply. In the final round, fan voting polls will open via SMS TXT message and at NBA.com. The combined results from SMS TXT voting and NBA.com will determine the champion.

The Sprite Slam Dunk and T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam are part of NBA All-Star 2010, which also includes the NBA All-Star Slam Dunk-In, Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout; Taco Bell Skills Challenge; Haier Shooting Stars; NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by adidas; and the 59th NBA All-Star Game.

Sprite, the world's leading lemon-lime soft drink, has been the official soft drink of the NBA since 1994 and the title partner of the All-Star Slam Dunk competition since 2003.

Reviews: Kobe Doin' Work & Passing Strange

Initially you would think these two works have nothing to do with each other but the tie that binds is the incredible work of Spike Lee.

As a narrative filmmaker I've enjoyed most of Spike Lee's films but occasionally they have left me wanting. I took it as artistic license. Some directors want you to work for yourselves. That being said I think as a documentarian Spike has really done some exceptional work. These two projects reviewed here, along with "4 Little Girls" & "When The Levees Broke" prove his has a keen eye at telling stories in the documentary genre that rivals many who have been making those kinds of films for years.

Kobe Doin' Work

I must admit my bias could show in this particular review. Along with most of my family I am a life long Laker fan. I grew up in Inglewood, Ca less than a mile away from "The Fabulous Forum" as it was known back in the day where the Lakers who gave way to "Showtime" played. In fact my high school graduation was held at the Forum. I knew Byron Scott as a teen and Elden Campbell and his family both of whom grew up in the area and attended Morningside High School.

My friends and I would get cheap tickets for the games and during blowout Laker wins when people closer to the action would leave their seats we'd sneak down and watch closer up. It seemed the security during that time didn't have to be as strict as it is now. I was one of those kids who'd hang over the railing hoping the players would slap our hands as they headed to the locker room at the end of games.

Kobe Bryant through his on and off court dealings has become part of the Laker legacy. He is the current banner holder for Laker greats. There have been times when he has wanted to leave the team but like others before him he seems to be a lifetime Laker.

This film follows him for one game against the San Antonio Spurs. With the use of cameras from ESPN and additional coverage by Spike and his crew we get an intimate view of what happens during a game with Kobe miked. Kobe also voice overs commentary explaining what is happening and his thought process during the flow of the action. He did the voice over work on the night that he scored 61 points against Spike Lee's beloved New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden in the 2007-2008 season. There is some ribbing between them about this that I found really funny from two men who respect each other but in another setting could've been two guys from the "hood" talking trash about to descend into a round of "yo momma" jokes.

Again I might be biased but I think Spike did a great job of capturing a lot of things we as sports fans and common observers don't see.

Even if you're not a fan of Kobe or sports this film gives you a glimpse of what it's like when someone is working in their passion.

Passing Strange

Passing Strange has a lot of passion as well.

It tells the story of a, "youth" trying to find himself. The themes are exploration and self discovery in the classic sense. It's something we all go through. That journey of getting away from what was already there only to re-discover it and realize it was there all the time.

One thing I realized after viewing this show is that some of my choices were made by a person (myself) who was living in fear so I can no longer fault that person for the decisions they made. They were doing the best they could at the time on the information they had.

I was watching the initial auditions of American Idol before I turned to the broadcast of Passing Strange on PBS's "Great Performances" series. Although it's fun to see people get a chance to pursuit their dreams on Idol and also watch the people who have no business auditioning within 5 minutes of Passing Strange I knew I was seeing true artistry at work.

The collaborators Stew & Heidi Rodewald have created a work that is deep, funny, insightful, and fresh even though the story is one that's been told in many formats by many people many times.

The musicians are top notch changing from each genre that is required to move the story forward from South Central Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Berlin, & back again.

The cast is exceptional. Each member except the, "Youth" & "Momma" characters portray three distinct and different people. It requires a adept skill at acting, singing, and dancing. They meet the task with aplomb and in a way I hadn't expected.

Spike Lee has done a great job of capturing the live theater experience of this show. I had heard of Passing Strange previous to this airing and seen clips of songs but that did not prepare me for the tidal wave of emotions I experienced while viewing. I highly suggest you look for the re-broadcast of this show in your area.

It enters my ears and swells in my spirit like a tidal wave of pulsations seeking to drown me in the memories of the ancestors

It's as if they have left their fingerprints on my heart as evidence of my place in the Universe
They admonish me to run on, to fight on, and to be free...

You see their drums were taken away, but I hear them...

I hear them

In the crack of the snap of a queen giving a major read to amplify a definitive point
In the cadence of a preacher caught up in the holy ghost making a definitive point
In the slam dunk of Dr. J, Michael Jordan, & Kobe Bryant all rolled into one making a 2 definitive points
In an Oprah AHA! Moment when she recognizes a definitive point

And I hear them in my prayers and meditation as the elders point me towards wholeness and holiness

The 20 Deuce Dime....

Greetings & Salaam,

I haven't done any end of the year or decade wrap up or beginning of year post because I didn't see the reason why.

I am not sure if I have become cynical (or more cynical than I already was) but with all the information out there what I post is such a drop in the ocean of BS that it almost doesn't matter to anyone but me...

I am very optimistic about this upcoming year. I see it as harvest time for me. Since moving to the bay I feel like I have finally put down roots. So now it is time for that which has taken root to grow and prosper and I really looking forward to it.

I've decided it's time to re-focus on my projects and produce my work. I did find out that an essay I wrote for a book that is to be titled, "Mighty Real" will be published this spring. It's interesting I submitted the work in early 2008 and had actually thought it wasn't accepted because I heard nothing form the editors and also saw posts where they were still looking for submissions. Getting that call was an affirmation. No matter how talented you think you are as a writer or artist it's nice to know when people like and respect your work.

So that's it for now. Not much really to post...

My prayer is for you to achieve everything you can think of...

My hope is that you will be able to grasp onto those things you were never able to imagine...
